The life of a self proclaimed foodie isn’t always glamorous and I don’t always hang out in Fine Dining establishments like Equus or gorgeous places like Babylonstoren. Sometimes you just have to eat because you’re hungry or you need a quick bite and you can’t be bothered to cook, and then you fall back on stalwarts like Jimmy the Fish. Jimmy the Fish is an unassuming restaurant on the outskirts of Stellenbosch as you drive towards Somerset West and their parking lot is always very busy! Whether this is because of neighbouring La Romantica or Jimmy’s clientele isn’t always clear, but it is fair to say both places are very popular.
We’ve been to Jimmy the Fish for dinner once before where we had a Rump Steak and a Kingklip and Calamari Combo, both of which were very good. We just happened to go on a Thursday night, not realising that all Combos are 30% off on a Thursday night. This is pretty much a feature of Jimmy the Fish; different specials are available on every day of the week with lunchtime promotions on from Monday to Friday and kids eating free on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Jimmy the Fish, predictably, does fish and seafood in various styles (incl. sushi), as well as steak, pizza, chicken, burgers and pork – so basically something for everyone.
The other day I went there with a couple of people for lunch. Service was very friendly and welcoming, and we started with Onion Rings, which was a HUGE bowl of onion rings. They weren’t really my cup of tea as they come in a thick batter, but they were nice and crispy and went down a treat with my fellow diners. I then had the Jimmy’s ‘Mini’ Seafood Platter and the others both had the BBQ Pork Ribs and Calamari Combo. The seafood platter was by no means mini – it was enormous and came with a choice of potato and some vegetables, making it very good value for money. The ribs and calamari was a big portion as well though it didn’t have accompanying vegetables and came with chips and peas. The portions were so substantial that all of us took at least half of our food home.
Jimmy the Fish is popular with families and has a kiddies play area as well as outside seating available, so along with this and all the specials that makes the place great value for money, it is understandable that it is so popular. The food I’ve had there has been consistently good, though maybe not particularly mind blowing or gourmet – but sometimes that is exactly what you’re after!
