What a shame that we only got around to attending the final Sundowner Picnic Concert for this summer season at Stellenzicht, and didn’t go any sooner! Every last Friday of the month from September to March, Guy Webber and his Hill & Dale team present sundowner concerts at Stellenzicht Wine Estate and sadly the first one we attended was also the last one for the current season. As you may know, the weather in the Western Cape is not always predictable at this time of year, but we were lucky enough to have near perfect conditions for sitting outside and listening to some live music on Friday night, as you can see below. Gates opened at five and when we arrived just before six the place was already rocking with people spread out on the grass and relaxing while the band was doing their sound check.
We were too late to get a table on the grass but quickly nabbed a table next to the tasting area overlooking the stage and with great views of the mountains. There are some tables available on the grass, but you have to be quick to get them, so it is advisable to bring your own chairs and/or blankets. We raided the local Spar and Woolworths for some snacks on the way to Stellenzicht and tucked in after purchasing a lovely bottle of Stellenzicht Sauvignon Blanc. I thought it is a great idea that you can bring your own picnic and with Hill & Dale and Stellenzicht wines available to buy, all your wine needs are taken care of (though you’re not allowed to bring in any alcohol of your own). For people who are after more than ‘chip & dip’ or snacks, fires are available to braai your own meat. We indulged in our snacks so much that we almost couldn’t be bothered to braai our chops and boerewors, but in the end we were glad we did as the meat was great as always, due to Chef Gerrie’s skills (ably assisted by Fishop of course!). I popped down to the braai area for a while and the vibe there was very social, with people introducing themselves and chatting away to strangers as if they’ve known each other for years. It is strange how a warm fire in the dark and sizzling meat seems to bring out the best in people!
The music varies each month and this time a cover band called Wroxeter was entertaining the crowd. Wroxeter does songs in the vein of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, The Eagles and other iconic seventies bands, and even though that is of course way before my time, it didn’t stop me from enjoying the music! The band started at 6:30 and as they played more and more people arrived until there was hardly any room left on the grass. As we relaxed with the sun setting and the music playing I was more than content, and I can think of a lot of worse ways to spend a Friday evening! The vibe and atmosphere was brilliant, with young and old mingling and chilling on the grass, and of course, the views from Stellenzicht are second to none as you can see from the amount of pictures I took of the mountains!
At R30 cover for the Sundowner Concerts with some superb live music and being able to bring your own food this is a great way to spend a Friday evening, so start getting your friends organised for when the events kick off again in September!
