Babylonstoren – Impressions

As I am still ‘detoxing’ we went to Babylonstoren yesterday for a walkabout – without eating! It is yet another place that gets rave reviews and that I’ve always wanted to visit…in this case we only visited for a lookaround, but it is well worth visiting!

And Now for Something Completely Different

To combat the ‘side effects’ of a rather debauched life of eating and drinking a LOT, and to keep my general fitness levels up, I do a variety of home exercise (when I feel like it!). Those of you who know me well will know I have a huge collection of Beachbody products, including the famous Insanity and P90X programmes. Continue reading

Schoon de Companje bills itself as ‘a collaboration of artisans in the true sense of the word, not merely a label, but rather the artisan that contributes to his community’. On Friday we stopped by for lunch, after walking past (and buying bread) repeatedly in the last few months. Every time we’ve been in De Companje the outside tables on Church Street are busy, but the inside areas very quiet; Continue reading

La Pineta – Throwback Thursday

  • Cost: R150-200/pp (incl drinks)
  • Rating: 3/5

I’ve been going to La Pineta since I was a student at Stellenbosch many years ago. Actually, to be honest, I probably haven’t been there in the last 10-15 years, but I remember it well from those days for always doing good food and being very popular. According to their website the restaurant has been recently refurbished, but walking in it looked pretty much the way I remember it, though maybe a little more ‘open’ and modern. Continue reading

After my amazing experience at Creation Wines in the Hemel en Aarde Vallei I thought it would be a good idea to try something similar a bit closer to home. I did a bit of digging and found a very nice sounding Food and Wine Tasting at Rupert and Rothschild Vignerons, just over the mountain from Stellenbosch. Yesterday started with smoke hanging in the air from an out of control fire in Jonkershoek but fortunately it cleared by lunchtime and I headed out to go and get some R&R. Continue reading

Creation Wines – A Religious Experience?

Creation Wines

The title for today’s post was inspired by a friend asking me on Facebook whether Creation Wines was a Christian farm, due to the name (she was being facetious!). Well, I wouldn’t know about that, but it did make me think and what I do know is that drinking and enjoying wine is close to a religion for me and I never pass up the opportunity to try out new wine related experiences like this one. To Cavalli or Not Cavalli

  • Good for: Fine Dining
  • Cost: R400-500/pp
  • Rating: 4/5

Last night was another gorgeous evening in the Winelands and we ended up dining at Equus, the restaurant at Cavalli Wine & Stud Farm. Turning off the busy R44 you enter a quiet world of indigenous plants framing the long and impressive driveway up to the restaurant. The building that greets you is very striking, with a beautiful living wall and magnificent views of the mountains. We decided to sit outside on the deck overlooking the dam and have a drink before taking our seats inside. Equus really has some amazing views and I fully intend to return for lunch to enjoy the view again. Continue reading
