After pigging out at Hudson’s and Carne all in one day, we agreed to have lunch the next day with ‘Pofmuis se Ma’ at Clarke’s Bar & Dining Room. Clarke’s is in the ridiculously trendy Bree Street and has a wide range of food, with breakfast, brunch and lunch served. Reading the menu I found it hard to decide what to order as there were so many things I would have liked to try! Huevos Rancheros (refried black beans on butter fried toast, with two eggs, pico de gallo, coriander, avocado and queso fresca) really caught my fancy if it wasn’t for the fact that I already had two eggs for breakfast. Eventually I settled for a Reuben, with brisket, braised cabbage, blue cheese dressing and Emmenthal on rye bread. Fishop had the 220g Cheeseburger that they are well known for, and Pofmuis se Ma had the Pulled Pork Sandwich with Kimchi and smoked mozzarella.
We put in our order and sat back with some drinks in the nicely shaded courtyard for a natter. After quite a while of no food arriving the waitress came by and told us that our food was all cooked but that it had inexplicably been delivered to another table! She then took our order again promising we’d have our food in a short while, which turned into a much longer while eventually! The food was good and very tasty and we weren’t in any hurry so it didn’t matter too much, but if we had limited time it would have been an issue. My Reuben was good, though the meat wasn’t quite pastrami or corned beef, which is usually associated with a Reuben, but brisket. The Pulled Pork Sandwich was proclaimed very good and the taste I had of the burger was very good as well.
Clarke’s Bar & Dining Room is a quirky place to eat with some really interesting options on the menu, in a trendy setting that draws in a range of different people. It is a good place to while away a lunch hour (or two!) while taking in the other delights of Cape Town!
