Jave Cafe in Church Street is such an institution that I walk past it constantly and almost don’t notice it anymore, and therefore never really consider eating there! When we were in town a couple of weeks ago we wanted a quick bite to eat and just happened to spot Java and their inviting outside tables, so we stopped by. Java is generally very busy when the students are in town but this was during their break so we got a nice table outside. People watching is great at Java Cafe, but first we had to figure out what to eat!

Their menu is very broad with many options, ranging from breakfasts, to sandwiches, to wraps, to salads, burgers, pizzas, etc and I daresay most people will find something to eat there. I chose a vegetarian wrap with Feta cheese and Fishop had a plain burger. Service was swift and efficient and when our food came it was nicely presented and perfectly edible. My only comment would be to question why on earth anyone would use baby corn in anything, but that is probably just a personal issue! The burger was fine though nothing particularly special, and the wrap was good for a lunch option. All the other food I saw going past looked very good as well, especially the salads.

My understanding is that both Apres Bistro and Craft are owned by the same people who own Java Cafe (I may be mistaken of course). We have visited both the other establishments and similar to Java, their service is good and they offer accessible food that is good value for money in a nice setting. All three places are in the centre of town and well worth visiting if you’re in the area – if not for the food, then definitely for the people watching!!
