We were staying at the top end of Kloof Street for the night, so as soon as we dropped off our bags and parked the car we ventured out. Hudson’s has been on my list to try for burgers for a while so we had to stop off there for lunch. Hudson’s is an informal dining option, with a good selection of shakes, cold drinks, beers and cocktails so there’s no danger that you’ll go thirsty! Continue reading

Last night we finally managed to dine at Guardian Peak, after trying unsuccessfully a couple of times before (once my fault, once their fault). This time we went for a special occasion as it was the gorgeous young engineer’s graduation yesterday so we had something special to celebrate! Guardian Peak is in Hidden Valley and has beautiful views, so we made sure we arrived at the restaurant with enough time to catch the last of the light in order to get some nice pictures. Rust en Vrede – Winemaker’s Lunch

  • Cost: R200-250/pp (incl Wine)
  • Rating: 5/5
  • Contact: Annandale Road, +27 (0)21 881 3881, Web

Yesterday we ended up at Rust en Vrede due to another establishment lower down in the valley not being able to accommodate us. I say ‘ended up’ like it’s a bad thing, but I was secretly very, very pleased as I’ve been meaning to visit Rust en Vrede for lunch but as they don’t serve beer it’s been a hard sell! The life of a self proclaimed foodie isn’t always glamorous and I don’t always hang out in Fine Dining establishments like Equus or gorgeous places like Babylonstoren. Sometimes you just have to eat because you’re hungry or you need a quick bite and you can’t be bothered to cook, and then you fall back on stalwarts like Jimmy the Fish. Continue reading

Over the last few months I’ve done extensive research and spoke to countless people about which restaurants to visit in and around Stellenbosch, and I’ve gathered a LOT of information. I happened upon Beyerskloof’s restaurant, Red Leaf, and their famous Pinotage Burger by chance when a friend mentioned that they went there for lunch and that I should give it a try. • Cost: R150-200/pp (incl drinks)
  • Rating: 3/5
  • Contact: R44 to Strand, +27 (0) 21 880, Web

I’ve been going to La Pineta since I was a student at Stellenbosch many years ago. Actually, to be honest, I probably haven’t been there in the last 10-15 years, but I remember it well from those days for always doing good food and being very popular. According to their website the restaurant has been recently refurbished, but walking in it looked pretty much the way I remember it, though maybe a little more ‘open’ and modern. Continue reading

After my amazing experience at Creation Wines in the Hemel en Aarde Vallei I thought it would be a good idea to try something similar a bit closer to home. I did a bit of digging and found a very nice sounding Food and Wine Tasting at Rupert and Rothschild Vignerons, just over the mountain from Stellenbosch. Yesterday started with smoke hanging in the air from an out of control fire in Jonkershoek but fortunately it cleared by lunchtime and I headed out to go and get some R&R. Continue reading

Towerbosch – What a Feast!

Towerbosch

I’ve been eyeing up the Towerbosch Sunday Country Feast for ages, and when I saw that Luna Paige and Gerald Clarke would be doing their Lovemore show there last Sunday I decided that it was the perfect opportunity to go and check it out. I booked well in advance to make sure we got a table and we turned up early on the day to make sure we could get some pictures. Lunch starts at twelve and shortly after twelve most people were there to enjoy the Sunday Country Feast. Continue reading

Postcard Cafe @ Stark-Condé Review – Stunning Views & Popularity

Stark-Condé Postcard Cafe

On the spur of the moment we drove to Jonkershoek yesterday afternoon and ended up having lunch at Postcard Café at Stark-Condé Wines. As it was approaching 2pm we didn’t expect to have any problems getting a table. On arrival the outside seating area was pretty full but we found a table that was free, and as so often is the case, seated ourselves as there was nobody on hand to receive us. After a couple of minutes a bustling waitress came up to inform us very bluntly that the table was reserved and that we couldn’t sit there. Continue reading

The New Blue Orange – Dependable as Ever!

The New Blue Orange

The Blue Orange is a coffee shop/restaurant in Dorp Street in Stellenbosch and it is pretty much a fixture in the town. Now called The New Blue Orange, I’ve been visiting this place since I was a student many, many moons ago (though I refuse to say how many years ago!). We decided to have breakfast there this morning as we keep driving past and the colourful tables under the oak trees look so welcoming and tranquil. Today is another scorcher so sitting under the trees proved to be a good idea. We sat out in the front and watched the usual throng of tourists and students walking by while having lovely fresh orange juice and coffee. Continue reading
