Yesterday we ended up at Rust en Vrede due to another establishment lower down in the valley not being able to accommodate us. I say ‘ended up’ like it’s a bad thing, but I was secretly very, very pleased as I’ve been meaning to visit Rust en Vrede for lunch but as they don’t serve beer it’s been a hard sell! The life of a self proclaimed foodie isn’t always glamorous and I don’t always hang out in Fine Dining establishments like Equus or gorgeous places like Babylonstoren. Sometimes you just have to eat because you’re hungry or you need a quick bite and you can’t be bothered to cook, and then you fall back on stalwarts like Jimmy the Fish. Continue reading

  • Cost: R150-200/pp (incl drinks)

Over the last few months I’ve done extensive research and spoke to countless people about which restaurants to visit in and around Stellenbosch, and I’ve gathered a LOT of information. I happened upon Beyerskloof’s restaurant, Red Leaf, and their famous Pinotage Burger by chance when a friend mentioned that they went there for lunch and that I should give it a try. Babylonstoren – Impressions

As I am still ‘detoxing’ we went to Babylonstoren yesterday for a walkabout – without eating! It is yet another place that gets rave reviews and that I’ve always wanted to visit…in this case we only visited for a lookaround, but it is well worth visiting!

Schoon de Companje – Collaboration or Identity Crisis?

  • Good for: Not much
  • Cost: R100-150/pp (incl drinks)
  • Rating: 2/5
  • Contact: Church Street, +27 (0) 21 883 2187, Web

Schoon de Companje bills itself as ‘a collaboration of artisans in the true sense of the word, not merely a label, but rather the artisan that contributes to his community’. On Friday we stopped by for lunch, after walking past (and buying bread) repeatedly in the last few months. Every time we’ve been in De Companje the outside tables on Church Street are busy, but the inside areas very quiet; Continue reading

La Pineta – Throwback Thursday

  • Good for: Families, Groups, Oxtail
  • Cost: R150-200/pp (incl drinks)
  • Rating: 3/5
  • Contact: R44 to Strand, +27 (0) 21 880, Web

I’ve been going to La Pineta since I was a student at Stellenbosch many years ago. Actually, to be honest, I probably haven’t been there in the last 10-15 years, but I remember it well from those days for always doing good food and being very popular. According to their website the restaurant has been recently refurbished, but walking in it looked pretty much the way I remember it, though maybe a little more ‘open’ and modern. Continue reading

To Cavalli or Not Cavalli

  • Good for: Fine Dining
  • Cost: R400-500/pp
  • Rating: 4/5

Last night was another gorgeous evening in the Winelands and we ended up dining at Equus, the restaurant at Cavalli Wine & Stud Farm. Turning off the busy R44 you enter a quiet world of indigenous plants framing the long and impressive driveway up to the restaurant. The building that greets you is very striking, with a beautiful living wall and magnificent views of the mountains. We decided to sit outside on the deck overlooking the dam and have a drink before taking our seats inside. Equus really has some amazing views and I fully intend to return for lunch to enjoy the view again. Continue reading
