For dinner we had a reservation at the (fairly) recently opened branch of Carne in Kloof Street, just around the corner from our guest house. It was a VERY hot day in Cape Town and it was stiflingly hot inside the restaurant. This was one evening we really could have done with sitting outside! Continue reading

Last night we finally managed to dine at Guardian Peak, after trying unsuccessfully a couple of times before (once my fault, once their fault). This time we went for a special occasion as it was the gorgeous young engineer’s graduation yesterday so we had something special to celebrate! Guardian Peak is in Hidden Valley and has beautiful views, so we made sure we arrived at the restaurant with enough time to catch the last of the light in order to get some nice pictures. La Pineta – Throwback Thursday

  • Good for: Families, Groups, Oxtail
  • Cost: R150-200/pp (incl drinks)
  • Rating: 3/5
  • Contact: R44 to Strand, +27 (0) 21 880, Web

I’ve been going to La Pineta since I was a student at Stellenbosch many years ago. Actually, to be honest, I probably haven’t been there in the last 10-15 years, but I remember it well from those days for always doing good food and being very popular. According to their website the restaurant has been recently refurbished, but walking in it looked pretty much the way I remember it, though maybe a little more ‘open’ and modern. Continue reading

Rupert & Rothschild Food & Wine Tasting – Some Not So Light R&R

After my amazing experience at Creation Wines in the Hemel en Aarde Vallei I thought it would be a good idea to try something similar a bit closer to home. I did a bit of digging and found a very nice sounding Food and Wine Tasting at Rupert and Rothschild Vignerons, just over the mountain from Stellenbosch. Yesterday started with smoke hanging in the air from an out of control fire in Jonkershoek but fortunately it cleared by lunchtime and I headed out to go and get some R&R. Continue reading

To Cavalli or Not Cavalli

  • Good for: Fine Dining
  • Cost: R400-500/pp
  • Rating: 4/5

Last night was another gorgeous evening in the Winelands and we ended up dining at Equus, the restaurant at Cavalli Wine & Stud Farm. Turning off the busy R44 you enter a quiet world of indigenous plants framing the long and impressive driveway up to the restaurant. The building that greets you is very striking, with a beautiful living wall and magnificent views of the mountains. We decided to sit outside on the deck overlooking the dam and have a drink before taking our seats inside. Equus really has some amazing views and I fully intend to return for lunch to enjoy the view again. Continue reading

Oppie Dorp – Why the fuss?

  • Cost: R200-250/pp
  • Rating: 2-2.5/5
  • Contact Details: 137 Dorp Street, +27 (0) 21 883 3889

Now, each time I either drive or walk past Oppie Dorp the place is absolutely packed. Reading the Tripadvisor reviews everybody raves about the place, so it seems obvious why it is always so busy. Last week I decided to beat the rush and book well in advance so I could try out the Oppie Dorp experience for myself. I went into the restaurant to book a table for 6 and duly watched the waiter write our booking down for Friday night – boy was I looking forward to this – I could hardly wait for Friday to arrive! Hussar Grill Stellenbosch – All about the Meat!

  • Cost: R150-200/pp
  • Rating: 4/5
  • Contact Details: 23 Plein Street, +27 (0) 21 882 8088, Web & Menu

We went to the Hussar Grill on Valentine’s day but I never posted a review as I didn’t take pictures and frankly, I just wanted to enjoy myself and not think too much about what to post or how critical I need to be about food and service. We did have a very good meal then, even though I don’t have photographic evidence – and I even wore an LBD!

Postcard Cafe @ Stark-Condé Review – Stunning Views & Popularity

Stark-Condé Postcard Cafe

On the spur of the moment we drove to Jonkershoek yesterday afternoon and ended up having lunch at Postcard Café at Stark-Condé Wines. As it was approaching 2pm we didn’t expect to have any problems getting a table. On arrival the outside seating area was pretty full but we found a table that was free, and as so often is the case, seated ourselves as there was nobody on hand to receive us. After a couple of minutes a bustling waitress came up to inform us very bluntly that the table was reserved and that we couldn’t sit there. Continue reading

The New Blue Orange – Dependable as Ever!

The New Blue Orange

The Blue Orange is a coffee shop/restaurant in Dorp Street in Stellenbosch and it is pretty much a fixture in the town. Now called The New Blue Orange, I’ve been visiting this place since I was a student many, many moons ago (though I refuse to say how many years ago!). We decided to have breakfast there this morning as we keep driving past and the colourful tables under the oak trees look so welcoming and tranquil. Today is another scorcher so sitting under the trees proved to be a good idea. We sat out in the front and watched the usual throng of tourists and students walking by while having lovely fresh orange juice and coffee. Continue reading
